LCS: employment opportunities

LCS offers permanent and “flexi” positions for residential care workers. All positions require some “sleep-in” duties and we operate a “shift system” that includes weekends as well as week days.

Permanent positions have guaranteed hours, worked on a rota system.

“Flexi” positions are not guaranteed but there are options to take up shifts when cover is needed for holidays, sickness or for any other reasons when we may be short staffed. The checks are exactly the same for Flexi RCWs as for permanent – it is a good option for people who may not want a full time position straight away and often fits around other commitments, like studying, or may appeal to someone who normally works as a teacher in a mainstream school and wishes to do extra paid work in the long school holidays. It is possible to apply for permanent work from a flexi position subject to availability.

We follow the safer recruitment guidelines from the 1992 Warner report.

Anyone wishing to apply to LCS must read the relevant job description (JD) below and complete the standard LCS application form. Please note that even if you have a CV, we still require a fully completed application form detailing full employment history and including any relevant qualifications.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview and asked to bring along proof of ID (passport or driving licence) and two original, authentic bills bearing proof of address (eg recent utility bill or council tax statement) plus original certificates for relevant qualifications.

Successful applicants are usually invited to a second interview which involves the young people. This will involve questions the young people have put together and may involve a visit to the home to meet one or more of the young people, who may also like to show you round their home.

Job offers are made subject to enhanced CRB clearance and receipt of at least two satisfactory references, one of which must be from your current or most recent employer.

Only when all documentation is in order and references verified will start dates be given. Each new member of staff then enters a six month probationary period and embarks on the CWDC induction programme. “Unqualified” staff (those without the minimum NVQ3 in Caring for Children & Young People, or equivalent) will be required to complete and achieve QCF Level 3 Diploma for the Children and Young People’s Workforce, within 18 months of their start date.

We aim to employ and develop robust, resilient and resourceful staff who work well together as a team and take both individual and collective responsibility in meeting the needs and caring for the children and young people looked after by LCS. To this end, we support continuous professional development and the achievement of further qualifications, including leadership and management awards in children’s services.
